Well not exactly to Vientiane, but close enough. You can fly for cheap to Udon Thani in the Northeast of Thailand, which is about 50km away from Vientiane. I haven’t done this myself, but I undestand that this is what people in Vientiane do when they go to Bangkok.

NokAir flies 3 times a day. Book online here. The prices below are for October as December flight are not available yet.

  • depart 06.00 – arrive 07.05 – $26
  • depart 12.20 – arrive 13.25 – $38
  • depart 17.40 – arrive 18.45 – $38

Air Asia flies twice a day from Bangkok to Udon Thani for about $40 (32 EUR) one way. Book online here. I have heard report about Air Asia not being so (more…)

Taking the train to Laos is a good option, not only to save money, but also to see some more places on the way to Luang Prabang. It’s also a relaxed way of traveling. You board in Bangkok in the evening, sleep through the night and when you wake up, you enjoy the views of the rural parts of Northwestern Thailand in the soft morning light.

You can find everything you need to know about travelling by train in Thailand on this website. Below I use some of their information: (more…)

For everybody in California who is thinking of going, the travel agent “American Travel and Tours” in Sacramento still has 10 return tickets available for San Fransisco to Bangkok leaving on 25 December for $925. This is good rate and you can get a discount if you book together.

You must book before the 19th of July, when the offer expires and probably gets more expensive. Who wants these tickets? Call the agent at 916-737-9287. Ask for Janak. (more…)

We want you to get more out of your trip to Laos than just the wedding. We also think it’d be great if we could do some travelling with friends and family. So we are organizing a little trip and everybody is invited to join.

We’re starting on 27 December with a (belated) Christmas dinner in one of Vientiane’s prime night time locations, the Kop Chai Due Restaurant. It’s a great restaurant, bar and beer garden set in a beautiful french colonial building with a live band every night.

The next morning we will have a bus arranged that will take all of us to Luang Prabang. But not directly. We will take it easy and break the trip in two, stopping for two days in the lovely little village of Vang Vieng. (more…)

Now suppose you’re thinking of coming to the wedding, how would you get there? Luang Prabang is a bit out of the way and definitely not a mass tourism destination, but the effort to get there is more than worth it. It’s located in the nothern parts of Laos and you won’t be able to find a direct flight there. You’ll have to get a ticket to Bangkok first. From there you can do several things: (more…)

Most of Veo’s family have booked their tickets, so this post is mostly directed to the Dutch friends and family. When should you go and with which airline? I cannot give you a clear cut answer, but here are some tips:

Book now! Don’t wait much longer. Ticket prices are only going up from now on. A lot of flights are being booked full as we speak.

Tickets that leave before Christmas are more expensive than flights that leave from the 24th of December onwards. Try booking your ticket on the 24th or 25th. (more…)

New Wedding Date July 4, 2006

What do you know? We just got the invitations printed and we are already changing the date of the wedding. Hahaha. The wedding is going to be on Tuesday 2 January and not 30 December as it says on the invitation.

Why? It turns out that there is a significant drop in prices for flights that leave on 24 December or later.

Given those ticket prices I think that many people will decide to leave around Christmas. This throws off a little plan that Veo and I have been thinking about for a while (more on that little plan in a later post). In fact Veo’s family has already bought their tickets to leave San Fransisco on 25 December. This gives them hardly enough time to make it to Luang Prabang in a relaxed way.

So, to give all of you the chance to benefit from the lower prices and to give you a little bit more time we decided to move the date forward a bit.
