Flights to Bangkok July 5, 2006Posted by Guido in flights, travelling.
Most of Veo’s family have booked their tickets, so this post is mostly directed to the Dutch friends and family. When should you go and with which airline? I cannot give you a clear cut answer, but here are some tips:
Book now! Don’t wait much longer. Ticket prices are only going up from now on. A lot of flights are being booked full as we speak.
Tickets that leave before Christmas are more expensive than flights that leave from the 24th of December onwards. Try booking your ticket on the 24th or 25th. With those dates you will be in time to join a little trip that Veo and I are organizing, but more on that in a different post.
If you want to stay only for a short time, leaving on the 29th would still get you to Luang Prabang in time, assuming you fly from Bangkok to Luang Prabang.
The rates you can get all depends on the dates you want to fly. The difficult dates are before Christmas and in particular the first week of January to go back. The cheapest tickets I found on booking websites are (leaving on 24 December, coming back 14 January.):
- atp.nl: Turkish Airlines, 796,00 EUR
- vliegtarieven.nl: Alitalia, 858,09 EUR
- World Ticket Center: Thai Airways, 859,95 EUR (leaving on 25 december)
- cheaptickets.nl: Cathay Pacific Airways, 941,54 EUR
- ebookers.nl: KLM/Gulfair, 961,00 EUR
It’s very possible that you won’t find these rates anymore when you check them, because they change by the day.
You can also check “offline” travel agents. Sometimes they have good deals and they can really search for that one cheaper chair if your dates a bit flexible. Ticketsellers.nl are located on Singel 302, Amsterdam, (020 528 50 68, email@example.com) but on their website you can fill out a form with your requirements. The guy I talked to will then search all possiblities and come back with an offer. Another option is World Ticket Center (Nieuwe Zijds Voorburgwal 159, Amsterdam 020-6261011, firstname.lastname@example.org). Don’t expect too much, my experience sofar is that the rates are not that different from the online guys.
If you want to fly from Bangkok straight to Luang Prabang, you have to fly with Bangkok Airways. They fly on the following times:
From Bangkok to Luang Prabang:
- depart 9.50 – arrival 11.50
- depart 12.40 – arrival 14.40
From Luang Prabang to Bangkok
- depart 12.30 – arrival 14.15 (not every day, check www.bangkokair.com)
- depart 15.20 – arrival 17.05
Keep these times in mind when you book your flight from Amsterdam to Bangkok, because it means you might have to stay a night in Bangkok if you can’t make a connection.
If you can’t make a same day connection from Bangkok to Luang Prabang, you could consider to not stay in a hotel in Bangkok that night, but to take the night train to Vientiane and fly from Vientiane to Luang Prabang. That would also be cheaper. More on that in another post.
